Buying a Pram Newborn

Parents and caregivers can depend on prams and pushchairs that can be multi-functional and versatile. They are the co-pilots for your child's new journey.

A pram newborn is dedicated to newborns and babies. It has a deep, sturdy carrycot that has soft and secure walls.

A pram is equipped with a bassinet, but it can also be converted into a stroller when the baby is ready.

Safety

Newborns need to be secured as much as is possible. A pram or stroller that has safety features will ensure that your baby is safe and comfortable during travel. A stroller or pram should include a break that is working and a 5-point harness (2 shoulder straps; 2 waist straps; and a crotch belt) and a wrist tether for the person driving it. Check that your chosen pram meets these standards before you buy.

Find a pram that allows your baby to travel in the recommended lying-flat position. This position is supportive for your baby and avoids the risk of a dangerous spinal curve that could cause spinal issues. By keeping the airways open, it decreases the risk for SUID (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or Asphyxiation). Most prams that are used from birth will have the seat unit, which will recline into a lie-flat pram position for infants and transform into a compact pushchair unit for older children.

The suspension of prams is vital as it will affect how smooth the ride. A pram with a lot of suspension is likely to be more costly but it could be worth the cost of this feature if you plan to use your pram every day for a few years or more.

Always read the directions and read the warning labels on your stroller or pram. When not using it, park your pram away from any potential hazards like bicycles, traffic or other people. Comfort

Having the option of lie flat seating is an absolute essential for infants as it promotes better lung and back development. Many prams have cocoons or carrycots that creates a cosy nest-like space for your newborn and can be easily removed from the frame. Other models, such as the egg2's bucket style seat don't recline to lie flat but still offer a comfortable ride to your baby.

Some cheap prams also have an extra bassinet, newborn compact stroller or inset seat so that you can easily switch between sleeping and sitting modes based on your baby's requirements. It is often called a "travel system" and is the initial setup you should test out with your newborn.

Find a pram that has two shoulder straps which are cushioned, and a five-point safety harness. It must fit your child's body comfortably. Make sure there are no gaps or loose areas where fingers could become trapped and that the buckles are simple to use - especially for older children. Also, think about if you would like an adult-facing pram. It is great to keep an eye on your child and helps them feel more secure by being able to see their parents.

You should be able to store bags for shopping and changing beneath the pram (but be aware that excessive weight could cause it to topple over).
