How to Unlock your Vehicle

Modern electronic key fobs provide more functionality and are more convenient in comparison to traditional manual keys. Batteries eventually degrade and need to be changed. If your Volvo keyfob only functions intermittently, the battery may be dying and you will need to replace it in the near future.

Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery on your own. Find a clean area to work on. Then, arrange all of the tools you'll need. Find the battery hatch and ensure that it is set to "open." Use a flathead screwdriver or coin or any other similar tool to turn the hatch wide. Then, carefully remove the battery out of its socket by lifting up on the side closest to the key-ring loop. Wear rubber gloves to protect the electronic contact surfaces.

Once the battery has been removed, place the new one into its socket. Make sure the positive side of the battery is facing up and that all clips are in place. Then slide the cover down and towards the key-ring loop until it becomes loose and then slides off. Uncover the cover and reveal the hidden key blade. This will be used to unlock your car through the driver's door when the battery of your key fob is dead or gone.

How to Start Your Vehicle

Modern vehicles are equipped with keyfobs which do more than just unlock and secure the doors. They can also be used to perform functions such as summoning or auto parking the vehicle. Find a clean surface on which you can arrange all the items needed to complete this project. Place the fob on the surface, with the Volvo logo facing upwards. When you press the unlock button only one time the alarm will be removed and the driver's doors will be unlocked. By pressing it a second it will unlock all the doors and tailgate. The unlock button can also be used to roll down the windows on the hot days or to let fresh air in prior to getting behind the wheel. If you'd like to go further then the keyfob may be used to trigger the ERS system, which will start the climate control system in your vehicle. It will warm or cool the vehicle to the desired temperature levels when the vehicle is in a parking.

How to Change the Battery

If your key fob is no longer locks or unlocks your car, it could be time to replace the battery. The battery can be replaced using a flathead screwdriver pry bar made of plastic or other small tools. First look for the small slot where the backup / emergency key fob made of steel used to be. Inject the blade of a screwdriver or prybar tool into this slot, and then gently pull the rear of the fob. After you have opened the fob, locate and remove the CR 2032 3V battery. Put a brand new battery in its place, and put the fob back together.

Note: Some older Volvos use a different battery which is the CR2025. CR2025 batteries are 7 10ths of a millimeter smaller than a CR2032 battery, and you will need to be aware of the location of your replacement.
