Choosing a Double Pushchair Twin

Side-by-Side

These are the most common type of double pushchair that can typically seat 2 children side-by-side. They tend to be a bit wider than single pushchairs, which means they're less agile on footpaths and can be a little tricky to navigate between the kerbs with a car attached. The extra size allows them to move more easily through doors, and they are more evenly distributed, so it is less burdensome to carry around on your back.

They can be used as a twin pram from birth and many models will take both a carrycot and 2 car seats. Some models can be converted to a single mode with a basket on the side (like the Cybex Venus).

One of the most impressive examples of this is the Bugaboo Donkey 5 which, in twin pushchair Mode, allows you to fit the rear seat and carrycot side by side. This creates a completely enclosed space for twins, and is perfect for babies. This pram also comes with a couple of really neat accessories, including newborn cocoons which can be positioned to face either direction (for a twin-facing pram) or facing forwards (for a standard single). It is not as lightweight as some other options however it's very cleverly created.

Tandem

If you plan to have twins you will require a tandem pushchair. This allows both children to sit together and interact with each one another. They are perfect for visiting the zoo as the children can look at the animals together. They're also ideal for parents who have to keep an eye on their toddler and the other eye on their infant, as they can see both of them simultaneously.

Some tandem pushchairs are very adaptable, since they can be converted back to single mode. This is especially useful when you are planning to have more than two children (or in the event that your child who is the oldest doesn't require a buggy any longer). This means you won't be left with an empty pushchair to store away and can be expensive.

The Cybex Venus, for example can be used in mono or double mode. The frame can be expanded to accommodate a second seat. This isn't the lightest of pushchairs, but it does come with a large shopping basket which is located behind the front seat in double mode (and behind the seat in mono mode). The seats can be positioned in a way that they face each the other or higher to see what the other is doing.

Some double tandem pushchairs such as the Joolz Geo 3, are able to seat one above the other or side-by-side. The compact, sleek frame makes it easier to maneuver through doors and aisles of supermarkets. Certain models can be used on uneven terrain or for a jogging walk thanks to their large rear wheels and four-wheel suspension.

Another benefit of a tandem pushchair is that it can often include two carrycots, or a car seat, and a buggy seat. You can save money by establishing an overall travel system from the beginning, and avoiding separate purchases. It's worth remembering that tandems are heavier and longer than single pushchairs, and can feel less stable bumping up kerbs or going over uneven surfaces. They also require dismantling to fit into cars.
