Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a condition that occurs when asbestos fibers cause irritation to the tissue that surrounds a lot of your organs. The cancerous cells will then develop.

The most well-known type of mesothelioma affects the lung's lining (pleura). The less common types affect the abdomen's lining and the lining around the testicles.

Doctors diagnose mesothelioma following a thorough examination of a tissue or fluid sample for cancerous cells. They may also order blood tests and imaging tests.

Signs and symptoms

Mesothelioma can affect the linings of various organs. The symptoms vary based on where the tumor forms in the pleura (lung lining) for pleural mesothelioma or the peritoneum in the case of peritoneal mesotheliom. General symptoms include fever, unexplained weight loss and fatigue. Other signs of mesothelioma are difficulty breathing and pain.

A physical examination is the first step to diagnosing mesothelioma. Your doctor will ask you about any past asbestos exposure and other factors that could increase the chance of developing mesothelioma. This includes your history of working in an industry where asbestos exposure was common, like manufacturing, shipbuilding or construction.

Most mesothelioma cases are diagnosed by imaging scans of either the abdomen or chest. These include X rays, CT scans (computer tomography), and MRIs (magnetic imaging). These tests give doctors the opportunity to see inside your body and detect mesothelioma as well as other lung tumors or stomach.

The X-rays will reveal a thickening of the pleura or the accumulation of fluid in the space between your lungs and chest wall, which are common symptoms of mesothelioma of the pleura. They will also detect any fluid in the abdominal cavity, which is often associated with peritoneal mesothelioma.

They can be done by removing a tiny amount of tissue through surgery or inserting a needle into the chest or abdominal area to remove fluid.

Doctors may also suggest testing for a tumor to understand how the tumor functions. These tests can reveal particular proteins, genes or other elements that are specific to the tumor.

The doctors also need to determine if the tumor has expanded. This is called staging. This allows them to describe the size of a tumor and whether it has spread.

After all test results are in the doctor will go over them with you. The doctor will also give you a prognosis. It is based on averages of other mesothelioma patients with similar symptoms and staging. Treatment

The road to a mesothelioma diagnosis not over once you are diagnosed. Treatment options depend on a variety of factors, including the type and severity of mesothelioma (how quickly it grows). Doctors will also take into account the general health of a person as well as age and other medical conditions.

It is often difficult to diagnose mesothelioma, since it is a very rare disease. A combination of tests, including chest CT scans and X-rays, are often used to confirm the diagnosis of mesothelioma. It can be used to aid in surgery by using drugs that eliminate cancerous cells. Patients suffering from peritoneal msothelioma could also receive intraperitoneal chemotherapy which is heated and injected into the abdomen. Some people are eligible to participate in clinical trials of new mesothelioma treatments. These are usually done in larger medical facilities, and could yield the most promising results. Even after treatment, mesothelioma case can occur again. The treatment options are based on the location of the recurrence and the treatment options previously used.

Prognosis

In general the mesothelioma prognosis of a patient is based on the type of cancer they have and the stage at the time they were diagnosed, their overall health and their age. It is also dependent on the size of mesothelioma and how well the treatment can control the symptoms.

A doctor will use several tests to determine a patient's prognosis which include imaging tests such as the CT scan or an X-ray, blood tests or biopsy. A biopsy is when a doctor removes the mesothelioma tissue or tumor and study it under a microscope in order to check for cancer cells.

These treatments do not treat cancer. Many patients with mesothelioma have outlived their initial prognosis. Some mesothelioma victims have lived for years, or even a decade, after their diagnosis. Stephen Jay Gould, a paleontologist, fought off peritoneal mesothelioma for 20 years ago. However, he eventually died from cancer that was not connected to mesothelioma.
