The sash is the internal framing that can be moved vertically either up or down in windows that open. This article will teach you how to do simple sash repairs.

Weather Stripping

Wooden window sashes can add a classic look to your home. They are also sturdy and can last many years provided they are properly maintained. They may, however, become damaged or degraded with time due to exposure and normal wear and tear. However, sash repair experts can restore your windows back to their original condition and maintain their appearance for much longer than newer replacement windows.

The first step to sash window repairs is addressing weather stripping. It's found on both the sash as well as the frame. If it's worn or loose, out, it can lead to drafts, as well as other issues. It is important to have the tools needed before you begin. Mark the location of the hinge channel on the frame (Photo 1) with pencil. This will allow you to place the channel in the right position after you've finished. Remove the sash, and then remove the hardware including the parting beads (Photo 2) and the cords or chains that hold it in place. Sash Weights

To replace sash cords the first step is to remove the access panels from the jambs. These are usually screwed or nailed into and need to be removed. It may be possible to take them out using the hammer or chisel but it is always better to lay out dust sheets prior to starting any work.

After the access panel has been removed, you can begin working on the sash. Prise the narrow parting beads (also called "tie rails") out of their grooves with a chisel or flat bar. They are typically wedged into or nailed but can be removed which is why it's worth your time here. If the sash is still in place, pry the mortise-and tenon joints using a hammer or screwdriver, then remove each wood peg. The sash should be able to move freely now, but it may need some lubrication in order to feel less stiff.

With the sash in an open position, measure enough sash cord/chain to reach from the pulley at the top of the jamb to the sash slot at the bottom. Cut the cord/chain and fix it using the previous step. You can employ a hammer, nail or screws, but nails are less likely to cause damage.

It is best to keep the original weights if you've purchased a kit that will replace the counterbalance that was previously installed.
