This book is an excellent example of how Darrow can develop a story about Avon. He also re-creates the jovial dialogue style Blake's 7 became famous for. If you're not a Blake's 7 fan it's not for you. The story is centered around the relationship between Avon, Vila and their mutual respect and disdain for the other's ruthlessness and cowardice.

There are some really captivating scenes in which Avon is forced to make the difficult decisions to safeguard his team and shows his more gentle side. The characters are given a deal of depth and each is given their own unique personality which makes them relatable. This is a story that will leave you wanting more. The writing is flawless and there's a real feel for the world that it takes place. It's a masterpiece written by an author at the top of her game.

She gives the once-famous California Perfume Company credit for breaking away from the traditional economic roles imposed on women in the 19th and 20th century America However, she exposes the ways in which its rhetoric sugar-coated what was really a rather radical economic proposition by covering it with ideals of respectability and domesticity.
